Can babies in childcare sleep with soft toys or comforters?

Soft toys and comforters should be withheld for infants under 7 months of age, as they increase the risk of suffocation. After this age, educators should assess the safety of any comfort item provided by families—checking for loose parts, size, and potential to cover a baby’s face. Always follow your centre’s sleep policy and refer to Red Nose and ACECQA guidance.

When should cot mattresses be replaced in early learning services?

There’s no fixed replacement timeframe. Mattresses should be firm, clean, free of sagging, tears, or mould, and meet Australian Standards. If in excellent condition, they may be used for longer periods. Soft, worn or sagging mattresses can increase the risk of suffocation and must be replaced.

Are cots with AS/NZS 2130 certification suitable for childcare use?

No. AS/NZS 2130 is outdated. Cots in childcare settings must comply with current Australian Standards (AS/NZS 2172). From January 19, 2026, compliance with updated mandatory safety standards will be required.

What if a baby will only sleep on their tummy?

Once a baby can roll from back to tummy and back again, it’s safe to let them settle in their preferred sleep position. Always place them on their back initially and ensure they are not swaddled. Remove any loose items from the cot to create a safe sleep environment.

What Do We Do Now That Our Baby Has Started to Roll Over?

A toddler keeps climbing out of their cot—can they sleep on a floor mattress?

Yes. Once a child can climb out of a cot, transition them to a safe floor bed or stretcher. Ensure the environment is child-safe and meets supervision requirements.

Are there recommended nap times for children under 3 in childcare?

Red Nose does not provide nap duration guidelines for toddlers or preschoolers. For general sleep recommendations by age, refer to the Raising Children Network.

Can children wear necklaces during sleep in childcare settings?

No. ACECQA and Red Nose recommend removing all jewellery before sleep due to choking and strangulation risks. Even with parental permission, centres must follow national safety regulations. Conversations with families about cultural or religious items should be respectful but grounded in safety protocols.

Can we let a baby continue sleeping in a car capsule or pram if they arrive that way?

No. Babies should always be moved to a cot that meets Australian Standards. Car capsules and prams do not provide a safe, flat sleep surface and increase the risk of positional asphyxia.

Is air conditioning safe in a baby sleep room?

Yes, as long as the temperature is monitored and babies are dressed appropriately for the conditions. Ventilation—either through open windows or mechanical systems—is recommended. Avoid overheating, and always place babies on their back with their head and face uncovered.
