I am trying to plan out my nursery for future baby but it's very small and has a lot of windows. We have also got a large wardrobe that impacts the space. I was considering the use of a floor bed instead of a traditional cot from 4-6months but was wondering about the safety of this. Is there any research to support using a cot over a floor bed?

I’m assuming you are planning on using a bassinet for the first few months.
Once baby is showing signs of rolling, they need to be transferred from a bassinet, which can be as early as 3 months. Most babies will be rolling by 4-5months.
Most parents transfer baby to a cot at this stage.

New Mandatory Standards for bassinets will become effective from Jan 2026.

Most babies do not move to a floor bed or other type of bed (eg toddler bed) until they are attempting to climb from the cot. (not usually climbing before 18mths)
Once baby is moving about (rolling, crawling, walking) then consideration needs to be taken of what areas of the room &/or house baby now has access to.eg other rooms, furniture, windows, blinds, water etc.
Have a look at our Cot to Bed brochure which discusses the household risks baby may have access to when they are no longer sleeping in a cot.
In particular mattress type for floor bed (firm, flat) avoid loose, heavy bedding, consider issues with bed rails as well as making house safe in terms of baby’s mobility….....particularly when you are sleeping.
