Mumma B

My 12mth old has been a terrible sleeper from day one. We ended up bed sharing on a floor bed. I’m only now managing to get him in the cot. His sleep cue is to snuggle into a pillow and he is then able put himself to sleep. I allow this in the cot and then remove the pillow from the cot to keep him safe. It’s getting harder to get the pillow out. He stirs and goes looking for it to resettle. Any ideas what I can do instead? In reading the resources, pillows are not recommended in cots at any age and it’s better to wait until toddler bed. I’m not ready to have him out of the cot for safety reasons around the house. Is the pillow still a suffocation risk when the child is able to walk or is it the climb risk that leads the recommendation? I’ve got a very thin light weight child’s pillow that doesn’t seem to offer any leverage for climbing. Help. Need to keep him self settling in the cot.

Red Nose Education

The risk of suffocation is less for a 12 mth old than it is for a younger baby. You are correct, for the older baby it is the risk of them using anything to assist with climbing from the cot.

You could also try a soft toy comforter to assist with settling.
