Handover for Continuity of Bereavement Support
A guide for healthcare professionals
A smooth and compassionate handover to bereavement support services can make a significant difference to grieving families. It ensures that no family feels left alone in their grief, and that support continues beyond the hospital or clinic.
Explain What Bereavement Support Means
Not all families will be familiar with the concept of bereavement support. The term can feel clinical or confusing—especially for those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. It’s important to gently explain that bereavement support is here to offer:
-
Emotional care
-
Spiritual and cultural guidance
-
Practical support navigating life after loss
Reassure families that this is not a mental health diagnosis or treatment. It’s a safe, compassionate space to help them begin to process their grief in a way that respects their needs and values.
Acknowledge Stigma and Concerns
In some communities, there may be stigma or fear around accessing support—especially if it’s seen as being linked to mental health services. Acknowledge these concerns and clearly distinguish bereavement support from mental health care. Position it as a normal and supportive part of care after loss.
This approach can help families feel more at ease and more willing to engage with available services.
Support a Thoughtful Handover
When referring families to bereavement services:
-
Take a moment to ask how they feel about this next step
-
Explain how Red Nose can support them in their own time and in their own way
-
Offer to make the connection on their behalf, or provide clear contact details if they prefer to reach out later
