Do I need to buy bassinet specific bedding (sheets etc) or can I use a larger cot sheet and make sure the side are firmly tucked in?

Yes, it is important to ensure sheets are tucked in well to reduce the risk of baby’s head & face being covered.
Also, ensure that the sheets do not “bunch up” under the edges of the mattress creating a surface that is not flat.
