Do you need a new mattress for a new baby (if I bought a second hand cot or bassinet)? If yes, why?

Red Nose

Red Nose does not recommend a new mattress for cot or bassinet for every baby.

However, it is important that the mattress remains firm, well-fitting and is clean, in line with recommendations of Red Nose that a mattress is firm, clean, well-fitting and flat (not elevated)

If you do not know the “history” of the mattress, particularly in relation to cleanliness and storage, it may be preferable to get a new one. For more information see:
