Hello, If you can help me, I have a 11 month old who suffers with severe plagiocephaly and is required to wear a helmet 23 hours a day and only have it off for bath time for an hour, my question is that he will be starting childcare soon and there abit worried about him wearing the helmet at childcare when it’s nap time, is it okay for him to wear it to sleep. Thankyou

Red Nose Education

Did the Child Care tell you what they are specifically worried about?
All Child Care Centres are regulated & are required to develop their own Sleep & Rest Policy which Red Nose does provide input into to improve safety in the sleep environments.
Usually if there are children who are “prescribed” therapeutic treatments eg like a helmet for Plagiocephaly.
The expectations of Child Care Regulatory Authority (supported by Red Nose) is that a letter be provided by the Health Professional providing the treatment to the child care to cover any changes in the baby/child’s sleep environment that may be necessary (or no changes) & if any intervention may be required. (which is unlikely in this situation)
The Health Professional can be eg a GP or Paediatrician, a Physiotherapist/Occupational Therapist/Dietician or other appropriate Professional.

Red Nose cannot provide this information for a Health Management Plan.
If the Child Care Director/Educator is unsure of this, Red Nose is happy to consult with them to explain the process.
