Hello, Is there somewhere which lists the best cot mattresses to buy for safety? Is there a brand that Red Nose recommends? Currently we have a moses basket from "Nature Baby" with the wool mattress, however I am worried it is too soft for safety. The product information is in the link: https://www.naturebaby.com.au/wool-moses-mattress-nb3021-6709 Any advice about the best mattress for a cot would be helpful as I will buy that to replace the moses basket if safer. Thank you, Yvette

Red Nose Education

Red Nose recommends using a mattress that is firm, clean, well-fitting & flat (not elevated)
Once baby looks rolling (or looks like they may soon be rolling) baby should be moved to cot.
The mattress you provided the link to does not look firm to me. It also looks like it may be thicker than 75mm. - please check individual product.

While there are no mandatory guidelines for bassinets, like Moses Basket, Product Safety does have some ” buying tips”  for bassinets which include:

Ensure the sides of the bassinette are at least 300 mm higher than the top of the mattress base.
Ensure it has a wide stable base and a sturdy bottom so that it won’t tip over.
Ensure the mattress fits well and is firm, smooth and no more than 75 mm thick.
If the product has folding legs, make sure it cannot accidentally fold during use.

Red Nose also has the following information:
As there is no Australian Standard for bassinets, we are careful to keep up to date with reports of accidents associated with their use. To date, the most frequent accidents associated with bassinet use are falls and suffocation hazards.
