Bre

Hello, just wanting to know the reason why the approved bonds sleeping bags have arms out from birth? Will this increase the chance of my newborn rolling? Or is it more sleep safe than other sleep sacks that restrict arm moments? Thanks!

Red Nose Education

There are two types of products here.
Swaddle suits, with the arms tucked in, may used for swaddling/wrapping in the early months (till baby is rolling)

Not all babies respond well to wrapping/swaddling & may use a sleeping bag from newborn.
A safe baby sleeping bag is constructed in such a way that the baby cannot slip inside the bag and become completely covered.
The sleeping bag should be the correct size for the baby with a fitted neck, armholes (or sleeves) and no hood

Red Nose has the following information about swaddle suits.
“It is important to be aware that there is very limited evidence to support the use of specific products as devices to promote infant settling, back sleeping position and no evidence to support these products as a strategy to reduce the risk of infant death.
Red Nose recommends parents and care givers use lightweight wraps such as cotton or muslin”

Once baby rolls, it is important to cease swaddling/wrapping - baby needs arms free to roll well. Not all swaddle suits can be modified to have “arms out”
