Kasey

Hello, My 7 month old boy will only sleep on his stomach. For 2 months I have been waking up multiple times a night and rolling him onto his side (refuses to sleep on his back at all so this is a compromise). Eventually, he just rolls back to his belly. He can confidently roll from back to belly but won’t often roll belly to back. I know sleeping on his back is the safest but I can’t get him to at all. It’s causing me severe anxiety and disrupted sleep, is there anything you can suggest? Thank you.

Red Nose Education

Most babies will be rolling by 4-5months - some earlier, some later
This is very normal as babies grow & become stronger.
Many babies then prefer to sleep on their side or tummy.
This is not something that needs to be stopped. It is important to make his new environment as safe as possible.

Red Nose message is to “Always place baby on back for sleep” not baby must always sleep on their back.
The message continues, even now your baby is rolling & preferring to sleep on tummy.
Always (continue to) place baby on back for sleep.
Keep head & face uncovered - no swaddling when baby is rolling, no loose or soft bedding
Safe environment - cot that meets Mandatory Aust Standards with firm flat mattress
