Hello, my son is 10 months old and is a very restless sleeper. In the fact that he will roll from one end to the other of the cot and wake himself up by banging his head. I know cot bumpers are a no no , but is there a product out side approved? it’s just he’s starting to get little bruises on his head and I’m not sure why to do?

Red Nose Education

Red Nose does not approve any specific products.
It is not uncommon for babies to roll into the sides of the cot hit their head or get arms/legs thru the slats.
Most bumpers do not cover the entire sides of the cot & may (or may not) reduce the impact.
At 10mths of age, your son is almost out of the age range for SIDS, which, by definition does not occur beyond the age of one. Most (90%) SIDS occurs in babies less then 6 mths of age.

There is also no evidence to suggest baby will cause any serious injury by accidentally bumping their head on cot sides.

‘Parents are concerned about the potential for injury from the infant bumping up against the cot or getting an extremity wedged between the slats.

They should be reassured by the Consumer Product Safety Commission(CPSC) data that clearly show that infants suffer essentially no long term injuries from contact with the cot slats, making cot pads unnecessary for infant safety.’(Moon 2007)

If you are concerned about the physical bruising to your son’s head, please consult a Health Professional.
