Alex

Hello! We are expecting our firstborn in July. I have just been given a "Natures Sway" baby hammock that is apparently used as a bed for newborns day or night. We have already purchased a cot that meets Australian standards for its design and mattress. A baby hammock doesn't seem to meet the requirements outlined for baby bedding on your website but is it ok to use? The hammock may be handy to move around the house so the baby can be near by in the day.

Red Nose Education

Red Nose recommends the safest place for baby to sleep is in a cot that meets mandatory Australian Standards.
A firm, clean, well-fitting & flat (not elevated) mattress is recommended.
Baby hammocks do not meet the requirements for a safe sleeping environment.
This is particularly important for unsupervised sleep.

Red Nose states the following about hammocks as a sleep environment:

One safety concern with the hammock is that it holds the baby in a curved position, this may cause baby’s neck to flex forward which may block baby’s airway not allowing airflow. A baby needs to be placed to sleep flat (not elevated or curved with chin on chest) to maintain an open airway

There is also a risk of injury or death from falls.
