Rebecca

Hi I am just wondering if it is safe to use a lambs wool underlay in a portacot to make it more comfortable? I am going on a family holiday and by the time we use it by son will be 14 months. Thank you.

Red Nose Education

Hi Rebecca,

Many thanks for your great question and lucky you to have a wonderful holiday to look forward to!

I understand that your son will be 14 months which places him outside the highest risk time for a SUDI to occur, however,  Red Nose continues to recommend that loose and bulky bedding never be added to a cot space . This also includes portable cots.

Soft bedding in cots and portable cots increases the risk of SUDI including fatal sleeping accidents.

It is important to the remember, that the Australian Standards for travel cot safety don’t extend beyond the firm foldable mattress that comes with the travel cot. Adding layers to the cot space in this instance adds risk.

Thank you for reaching out and a have a great trip!
