Kylie

Hi, I am trying to find information of having scent diffusers in the sleep environment. Would this create a risk (excluding hanging cords) or is it safe to implement? Thanks

Red Nose Education

Red Nose has no specific information linking the use of vaporisers, humidifiers or diffusers to Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI)

There could be potential risk for injury (eg burns) if a toddler/older child were able to access these items.
Care would need to be taken as to where these devices are placed in your Centre &/or whether there is any risk of children accessing either the steam (in case of vaporiser) or the essential oils.
Need to assess whether the strength of the odour might cause irritation to baby’s small airways & maybe eyes.
Some of the oils do cause irritation to eyes so guess there is the potential for the same with babies, toddlers & older children.
Also there is the potential for an adventurous toddler/young child to want to explore/drink some contents???

I would also suggest checking with your State Regulator/Assessor to see if there are any other general safety concerns about the use of these types of products from a Regulatory perspective.
