Hi, I have a quick question regarding safe sleep. I have noticed educators in a childcare setting propping children’s sleep mats (on the floor) up with a cushion underneath when they are congested or coughing a lot. I disagreed with this and explained that it could cause chest to chin and removed the cushion which the educator agreed with but they were under the impression that this practice did not go against safe sleep recommendations and we are just looking for clarification. The educators have also been advised that they are able to prop a mat slightly up in a cot as well for the same reason. All children under 2 years. Thank-you.

Red Nose Education

Red Nose recommends the following when a child is in a cot, but particularly those less than 12 months of age,
A safe mattress is one that is the right size for the cot, is firm, clean and in good condition and is placed flat (not tilted or elevated) - https://rednose.org.au/article/what-is-a-safe-mattress

From ACECQA (Child Care Regularity Authority)
Children’s mattresses should be firm and flat with secure bedding and free of loose or soft items.
