Hi, I work in the Nursery at a childcare centre and our policies state that infants (which they define as 0-12 months) must be placed on their backs to sleep, which is fine. But what about children over 12 months who are definitely standing and moving around confidently? Are they allowed to initially be placed on their stomachs to go to sleep? There are a few children over 12 months old who prefer stomach sleeping and getting them to sleep on their backs is very hard and they don’t like it. Thank-you!

Red Nose Education

Babies/toddlers/children who are rolling, do not have to sleep on their back, but it is best practice to place them on their backs, & allow them to find their position of comfort.
This is usually the case from about 4-5mths when baby is rolling.
Ensure babies who are rolling are not longer wrapped - babies need space of a cot & arms to roll safely.
