Hi! My understanding is that the recommended sleeping position from week 28 of pregnancy is side sleeping (either side is safe). However, every time I try to sleep on either side, I can feel baby moving/kicking more forcefully. As soon as I change to a semi sitting position (i.e. “semi fowler” position with pillows behind me supporting back and head plus a pillow under my knees), he seems to relax as if the side sleeping position could somehow be uncomfortable to him. Any advice on that, please? I’m 33 weeks pregnant and don’t know if I should be more persistent on the side sleeping or if the incline position is safe too. Thanks so much!

Red Nose Education

The main recommendation for side sleeping during pregnancy (after 29 weeks) is to reduce the risk of blood flow to baby from Mum’s major blood vessels which may be compressed by weight of baby during last trimester.

If you are concerned with babies movements (slower or faster) please discuss with your Midwife or Obstetrician for specific information.
