Hi there, I am just setting up our bassinet and wanted to seek guidance around the use of a short lambswool rug under the fitted sheet as a waterproof protector. I see that this material is listed as not being recommended for safe sleeping, however it looks as if is the case if placed over the sheet? Can you please provide additional details regarding the use of lambswool and if this is not recommended at all, can you advise what waterproof sheet / option is preferred for placement under the fitted sheet? If an alternative waterproof sheet /option is to be used, can you also please confirm whether or not it can go over the whole mattress or just where the lower half of the babies body? Many thanks - Danielle

Red Nose Education

Red Nose recommends that all babies be placed for sleep on a firm mattress. - with nothing loose or soft in the cot/bassinet which may cover baby’s head or face.
The use of mattress protectors are fine, as long as they do not impact on the firmness of the mattress or are loose.
One of the issues with lambswool/sheepskins are that they may create a soft surface for baby to sleep on & may increase the risk of overheating.

A soft mattress or sleeping surface can increase the risk of sudden unexpected infant death if baby rolls over onto the tummy.
Remove plastic packaging from the mattress and always make sure that the waterproof mattress protector is strong and a tight fit.
Never put soft bedding under the bottom sheet, such as a sheepskin, as this makes the sleeping surface too soft.
