Chelsea

Hi there, My daughter is almost 2 and seems to sleep better with a quilt (under supervision only) than with her sleeping bag. Her cot is able to be converted to a toddler bed that has 3 sides enclosed but one side open. Is it safe to use a quilt in this style bed once she reaches 2? Thank you.

Red Nose Education

Hi Chelsea,

Thank you for reaching out to Red Nose!

Quilts are a safe to use for children 2 years and older once they are no longer confined to the cot space. The danger with thick and heavy bedding in a cot, is that is can bundle and bunch easily and babies and children can find themselves caught underneath, which can lead to overheating and suffocation. Quilts are not appropriate for infants or babies and are very dangerous.

At 2 years of age however, she is well outside the high risk of SIDS and therefore, is at a much safer age to use quilts. Pillows are also an option at this age if you feel she would like to use one.

I hope this helps!
Have a wonderful day,
Jane x
