Briony

Hi, your safe sleeping guide mentions breast feeding reduces the risk of SIDS. I was just wondering if that is for solely breastfeeding? I breastfeed but have to top up my baby with formula due to my milk supply, so do babies have an increased risk being on any formula at all or only if they are on formula only? Thank you

Dear Briony,

Many thanks for your wonderful question.

It is fantastic that you are breastfeeding your baby for all the wonderful benefits that is bring for you and your baby.

The research does tell us that that breastmilk is supportive in a variety of different ways in reducing the risk of SUDI and you would have read about these in our information statement about breastfeeding.

Infant formula is still and wonderful food for babies and even though it is a close match to breastmilk, it is still quite different and is digested and metabilised a little differently.

Exclusive breastfeeding holds the greatest benefit in reducing risk, however ANY breastfeeding is supportive and we encourage you to continue to provide this to your baby if possible.

Please continue to love and nuture yourself and your baby and provide them with what they require to thrive; even it that means complimenting their breastfeeds with infant formula.

Following the other 5 safe sleep recommendations will help to reduce the risk of SUDI.
