I am aware that sheepskin etc is not recommended as it reduces the firmness of the mattress, although the cot mattress is getting very cold overnight, impacting sleep. Is there anything that can be used to make the mattress warmer? Alternatively, what is the age that we may use something such as a wool underlay (baby is 1 year)?

As long as any woollen underlay does not reduce the firmness of the mattress then it may be suitable.
How old is your baby?
You can always place an extra layer of clothing on baby or a warmer sleeping bag (if using) if you are concerned he is waking due to being cold.
