Gemma

I am enquiring on behalf of an early childhood setting. We have a child who is 10 months of age and the parents have requested they sleep with a comfort toy. Are there guidelines around what age it is safe to allow children to have soft toys in their cot? Thank you

Red Nose Education

Red Nose has the following information
https://rednose.org.au/article/soft-toys-and-comforters
Withhold the use of soft toys & comforter before 7 mths of age.
Consider safety/appropriateness of specific comforters sent from home. eg is baby at risk of head & face covering with this product. Are there loose objects on comforter that could be loose & increase choking risk?

ACECQA
Whether soft toys and comforters can be used in the sleep space should be decided by referring to:
»best practice guidance by recognised authorities, such as Red Nose Australia; and
» the service’s sleep and rest policy and procedure, including sleep and rest risk assessments.
