Lidia

I am looking at the il Tutto Cozee co sleeping bassinet and they state that the material used is breathable. 2 sides are completely mesh and the other 2 sides have ‘breathable’ material. Is this safe for a baby or is it best to get a bassinet with mesh all around? Just worried this could be a suffocation issue. Thanks so much!

At the moment there are no Mandatory Standards for bassinets in Australia,

Product Safety Australia (ACCC) develop & monitor safety standards.

New Safety Standard for bassinet is being developed & will become Mandatory in Jan 2026.

The Standard will follow the information previously provided by them on their web site & is related to stability, mattress size & firmness, height of sides.

Product Safety also discusses risk of suffocation as:

Babies can suffocate if the bassinet or cradle:

  has the wrong mattress
uses pillows, bumpers or folded quilts
has soft toys or sleep aids placed inside
It is also important to remember, that once baby is attempting to roll, they need to be moved to a cot & no longer swaddled.
Babies need the space of a cot & arms free to roll safely.
Most babies are rolling by 4-5mths.
Also, if using a co-sleeper, ensure the side is not left down when baby is sleeping.
