Red Nose Education

At 11 months of age, your baby is almost at no risk of Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI) which occurs in babies less than 1 year of age.

90%  SUDI occurs in the first 4 months.

The risk of suffocation from padded bumpers is very low at this age, however, Red Nose still recommends to keep soft padded objects out of baby’s cot until in a bed.

Older babies in a cot can be at an increased risk of a sleeping accident by using pillows and bumpers as a step to climb up and fall out of the cot.
It is safer to wait until the child starts to sleep in a bed before introducing a pillow or other soft bedding.

When using a product like mesh bumpers, it is important to follow manufacturers instructions when fitting.
There have been some concerns expressed about the risk of entrapment, if the product is not used or fitted correctly.
Some of the manufacturers will not guarantee the safety of their product if it is not fitted correctly.
Many of these products do not carry mandatory safety standards in relation to infant sleep safety.
