My 1 month old slept on his tummy while in the special care unit while at the hospital and sleeps very well on his tummy. At home he naps on his tummy (with constant supervision) and sleeps on his back overnight or when he can not be constantly supervised however we have noticed he sleeps better on his tummy. Since it’s safer for him to sleep on his back, is there a way to mimic tummy sleeping? Currently we use an ergo pouch to swaddle.

Red Nose Education

Many babies do sleep better on their tummy. This s the problem with babies who are very young & for some their “sleep/wake ” control mechanism is not fully developed. Also, when a baby is in their early months their airway is best protected when on their back.

Babies do learn to roll & most babies who are rolling (themselves) will prefer then to sleep on their tummy.

It is also important for a new born baby to wake regularly from sleep to feed.
