My 20 month old hates sleeping bags and sleeping suits (I’ve tried many, spending a lot of money!) She would prefer blankets and I have been using light weight one but now it’s getting cold, I’m thinking about something warmer. Do you have specific recommendations? Is it best to layer blankets or use a doona? I was gifted a doona for my first born but never used it so would be good to use something I already have.

Red Nose Education

Dear Felicity,

Many thanks for reaching out to Red Nose. If your baby is preferring to use blankets or doonas it is best not to force her into sleeping bags if she is unhappy.

Blankets are still a very safe option to use inside a cot space.  Remember to always place her on her back at bedtime with her feet at the bottom and firmly tuck the blankets in, drawing them up to the level of her chest.

Doonas are not recommended in the cot space because they are often too heavy and are too bulky to fit safely in the small space a cot provides.

If your 20 month old is sleeping in a toddler bed, single bed or a mattress on the floor, either option are fine to use.

Best wishes,
Jane x
