My 4 month old sleeps in a safe sleeping bag But I have noticed that on cold nights the mattress gets very cold. I read that no soft items should be placed in the cot but was wondering if a sheep skin mattress topper is safe to use if placed UNDER the fitted sheet?

Hi Nat,

Thank you for contacting Red Nose with your question.

Red Nose recommends that baby sleeps on a mattress that is firm, clean, well-fitting & flat.

The following information about the importance of a firm mattress is : A soft mattress or sleeping surface can increase the risk of sudden unexpected infant death if baby rolls over onto the tummy.

Always make sure that the waterproof mattress protector is strong and a tight fit.

Never put soft bedding under the bottom sheet, such as a sheepskin, as this makes the sleeping surface too soft.

If the product you are inquiring about creates a soft surface &/or reduces the firmness of the mattress, it would not be recommended, especially at this age (4 months) as baby is learning to roll.

If you are concerned baby is cold, maybe you could add an extra layer of clothing or a higher TOG rating sleeping bag.

Regards,
Red Nose
