Bek

My 5.5mo is still in a bassinet in our room as we cannot fit the cot in our room. We want to transition him into the cot in a separate room but are worried, he only rolls onto his tummy but doesn’t roll back onto his back, and gets stuck on his stomach during day naps. The other issue is that he throws up a lot and I am worried that he may choke in the middle of the night and we won’t hear him. These reasons have delayed us moving him into the cot once he started rolling.

Red Nose Education

Red Nose recommends that any baby who is attempting to roll needs to be moved from bassinet to a cot & to cease swaddling/wrapping to reduce the risk of becoming stuck in an unsafe position.
Babies need their arms free & the space of a cot to roll well.
How does he go with tummy time when awake?

Have a read of the Red Nose information now that he is rolling .
“Give baby extra tummy time to play when awake and supervised as this helps baby to develop stronger neck and upper body muscles which in turn enables them to roll back over.
Make sure that baby is on a firm and well-fitting mattress that is flat (not tilted or elevated).
Make sure that baby’s face and head remains uncovered (do not use lambswool, doonas, pillows, cot bumpers or soft toys)

As babies grow and develop, they become very active and learn to roll around the cot.
At this time, continue to put them on the back at the start of sleep time, but let them find their own position of comfort”

Room sharing is recommended for the first 6 mths, but a safe environment takes priority over room sharing if there is not the space for a cot.
Check baby during the night - eg when you wake up/get up during the night.
“Parents are not expected to observe their baby constantly. If your baby is sleeping in a separate room check baby regularly to ensure that the baby remains on the back and the head and face remain uncovered”
