Gary

Our Daughter has a 9 month old baby and she is a great follower of your organization. With winter upon us Baby is bedded down in a sleeping bag, I thing this is the right term for it. He is having restless nights and I suggest a good quality pure wool underlay but our daughter was reluctant to go this way. Just wondering your thoughts. Thanks!

Red Nose Education

Bedding amount can often be difficult to determine, but Red Nose does have a few suggestions/recommendations.

Key recommendations are to ensure baby’s head & face remain uncovered.
As a 9 month old if usually rolling, often kicking off any blankets, it may be preferable using a sleeping bag, where an extra layer of clothing can be added as required to keep baby warm.

Always use a firm flat mattress for baby’s sleep. If a woolen underlay does not fit properly, can come loose or reduces the firmness of the mattress, then it should not be used.
Remember, the risk/concern is particularly about overheating & some underlays can reduce the need for extra bedding.
Always keep baby’s head & face uncovered.

Some further information from Red Nose web site:
“It is not necessary to monitor the room temperature or to leave the heating or cooling on all night, as long as the baby is dressed appropriately for the room temperature: Dress baby as you would dress yourself – comfortably warm, not hot or cold. A good way to check baby’s temperature is to feel the baby’s back or tummy, which should feel warm (don’t worry if baby’s hands and feet feel cool, this is normal).”
