Maria Noakes
Our family is about to go a big three month camping trip and I would like advice on a suitable bed or portaot for my daughter. She will be 14 months old when go and she currently weighs about 9.5kg. We will be sleeping in our camper trailer so I would like to know if she will be old enough to sleep on an inflatable kids bed with side rails or needs to still use the portacot (I currently have a Phil & Teds travel cot). Thank you

Dear Maria,
Thank you for reaching out to Red Nose!
Even though your daughter is outside of the highest risk age range for a SUDI to occur, she is still young, and therefore the safest option in this scenario is to use a portable cot. These devices are designed for this very purpose and meet the Australian safety standards for long and particularly unsupervised sleeps (i.e. overnight).
They can be used for children up to 15kg in weight and your daughter is well below that.
Do not be tempted to add any extra padding or pillows to the cot space over the top of the thin mattress that is provided. Adding addional softness will negate any safety standards and will increase the risk of a SUDI occurring.
I hope this helps1 Enjoy your fabulous camping trip!
Best wishes,
