Sometimes when I lay my 6 week old down in his bassinet after he's fallen asleep in my arms, he'll instantly roll onto his side-like it's a reflex. In regards to safe sleeping, is it dangerous to leave him like this? Also, should I stop swaddling and use the sleep sacks with arm holes now?

Hi Skye,

Thanks for reaching out to Red Nose!

Many young babies move like this and you’re quite right - it’s a reflex.  Some remain on their sides and some end up on their tummies.

Both the side lying and tummy sleeping positions are very dangerous for babies to be left in - particularly young babies.

This is because when babies rest on the sides (which is a very unstable position for baby() they can easily roll/flop onto their tummies,  significantly increasing their risk of a SUDI occurring.

The airway protection reflexes that babies are born with do not work as well in other position than the the back sleeping position.

Since your beautiful baby is able to roll to his side, it is safest to cease swaddling and begin sleeping him in safe sleep bag including features as you have described.

Best wishes,
Jane x
