What is a Safe Bunk Bed?

Serious injuries can occur if the bunk bed is poorly made or is used incorrectly. Falls are the most common source of injury involving bunk beds, and can be fatal.

Only buy a bunk bed that complies with the Australian Standard (AS/NZS 4220). By law, all new bunk beds sold in Australia must meet this standard. Ask the retailer if you’re not sure.

Beware of entrapment hazards. Check that there are no gaps between 95 mm and 230 mm anywhere as children can trap their head. Check there are no unsafe gaps in the guardrails and between the wall and the bunk bed.

Some second hand products may not be safe. If you are buying a second hand bunk bed make sure that it complies with the current Australian Standard. Always make sure that the instructions come with the product that you are buying. Follow the assembling instructions and how to use the bunk bed safely.
