Each year over 100,000 Australian parents or 1 in 5 mums and 1 in 10 dads or non-birthing partners, experience the impacts of perinatal depression and anxiety.

Red Nose Australia along with 45 other organisations are collaborating for Perinatal Mental Health Week to help reduce the stigma around perinatal anxiety and depression, provide education and support new and expectant parents.

This week is an opportunity to start a conversation around mental health with new and expectant parents and raising awareness of support services available.

The demand for Red Nose support services continued to rise during Australia’s pandemic with many parents unable to turn to their usual support networks.

From March 2021 until April 2022, Red Nose delivered more than 22,147 support sessions to families whose baby or young child died – up 8% on the previous year. These sessions include, phone calls to the Red Nose 24/7 support line, wellbeing activities and more.

Quotes from Keren Ludski, Chief Executive Officer at Red Nose:

“This Perinatal Mental Health Week, we want everyone to look into their communities and reach out to new and expectant parents and let them know they are not alone.

“The transition into parenthood can sometimes be challenging especially when parents have a history of loss either through miscarriage, stillbirth, infant or child death. We are here to let new and expectant parents know that they are not alone. We understand and we are here to help and support them.

“The Red Nose bereavement support line is available 24/7 on 1300 308 307. It is a free service available for anyone who has been affected by the loss of a pregnancy, stillbirth or the sudden and unexpected death of a baby or child.”
