Hello, I'm just wondering about the safe sleep guidelines for toddlers over 2, transitioning into a bed. I've read your articles and understand that the bed shouldn't be against a wall and that height should be considered carefully. I'm more wondering about using blankets. The brochure mentioned that toddlers shouldn't be in sleeping bags outside of a cot due to increased risk in injury. Is there a recommendation on how the bed is made up for toddlers then? Or is it generally the same as an older child/adult (sheet and doona/blanket). Is there anything in particular I should be doing to ensure the sleeping arrangements are as safe as possible? (Tucking doonas in, using cotton blankets etc). My little one has never slept with a blanket, so this will be all very new to us! Grateful for any thoughts. Thanks.

Red Nose Education

The issue of bedding once child is in a bed, is different to that of a baby (particularly a baby under 12 months, & in a cot)
Consider no longer using a sleeping bag (risk of trips/falls)

Blankets & pillows may be used; however, children often do not sleep under blankets or other bedding, but will kick off.
Continue to avoid heavy (or weighted) blankets.

The major concerns for transfer to a bed, is particularly around issues of safety now that child is not “contained” in a cot.
If a child who is being slept on a mattress/floor bed/toddler bed, consideration needs to be given as to where this child is slept & what risks are there in the child’s environment (what do they have access to now they are no longer in a cot)
eg access to other parts of the house, curtain/blind cords, windows, furniture that might tip over….

A child no longer sleeping in a cot has greater access to all living areas. Before your child graduates to a bed, check your child’s room and throughout the house for possible hazards.
