Hi. I’m transitioning my baby out of their bassinet soon. I wondered if it’s safe to sleep a baby in a portacot in our room for a few months? I wanted to keep them in our room until they’re a bit older before they sleep in their cot in their room. I wasn’t sure, if a portacot is appropriate for longer term use, rather than just a few days. Obviously I will use the mattress provided with the portacot, ensure it has no additional padding and that the sheets fit tightly.

Product Safety Australia (ACCC) have recently updated their information on portable/folding cots.
They have removed the information in relation to temporary use. Their recommendation states that a standard household cot (that meets Mandatory Australian Standards) is still the preferred option. However, there are times when a household cot is not available for use.
“Portable folding cots are not as sturdy as household cots. They should only be used when a household cot is not an option.”

As portable cots are not as sturdy as household cots it is recommended that the following is regularly checked:
Integrity of locking mechanism
No wear & tear &/or damage to mesh.
Baby’s weight does not exceed limit for use of specific cot (usually 15kg but does vary with some brands)
Please check full information available from link above.
