Steph

We are travelling for a few weeks in January and we will be sharing a room with our then 10 month old. Just wanted to know if this is safe for us to buy and use around her porta cot to keep the light out. https://thesleepstore.com.au/brand/snoozeshade/travel-cot-snoozeshade-blackout-cover?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIlIDl_6vp8wIVo5lmAh1v9AbVEAQYAiABEgI0IfD_BwE

Red Nose Education

Red Nose has no specific information about this product.
However, there is some concern about this type of product, including what safety standards it complies with, if any.
Some information about products in general.
It is often assumed that all nursery products sold in retail stores must be safe, however many products have never been formally tested so it can be difficult to tell what is safe for your child.

Parents need to assess:

1. Is the product I am thinking of buying/using safe for my baby especially during sleep?

2. What are the potential benefits of using this product and what are the potential hazards?

3. Am I using the product in a safe way?

4. What is my baby/infant doing in this product, and does this create any potential hazards?

There is no mandatory Australian safety standard for these products for infant sleep.

Some things to consider before using these types of products.
Are you able to see your baby?
is there plently of air flow/ventilation?
Is your baby able to pull up on the sides of the cot (or furniture)?

Red Nose has the following information about portacots
Ensure your portacot meets Australian Standards (AS/NZS:2195)
Do not use a portable cot if your child weighs more than 15kg (or check instructions of your particular model)

Please check the weight limit for your cot (some are as low as 8kg
