Tummy play is safe and very important for babies from birth, but only when they are awake, not too tired and supervised by an adult.
Tummy play helps muscle development in the arms, neck and back. It can help prepare babies for crawling and sitting. Tummy play may also help to prevent a misshapen (flat) head in some children.
Any time your baby is not on their back they are doing a form of ‘tummy time’ as they are working hard to keep their heads upright. You can start this type of play from birth, slowly increasing the time they spend playing on their front.
