A child no longer sleeping in a cot has greater access to all living areas. Before your child graduates to a bed, check your child’s room and throughout the house for possible hazards.
Before moving your child to a cot, ensure any areas they may access are safe.
Pay special attention to potential hazards that may result in :
Falls
- Ensure stairs and windows are not accessible.
Drowing
- Make sure all access to water is removed
- Toddler-proof any pet water bowls.
- Ensure all gates and doors to pools or bodies of water are locked.
Strangulation
- Keep dangling cords, strings and mobiles out of reach as they could get caught around a child’s neck.
- Pay attention to curtain cords and ensure they are out of reach.
Poisoning
- Ensure all access to medicines or potentially hazardous cleaning materials are out of reach
Entrapment: How to prevent furniture accidents in the home
- Ensure toddlers can’t fall between beds and walls. It is safest to have beds away from the wall.
Burns or electrocution
- Keep heaters, electrical appliances and access to power points well away to avoid the risk of overheating, burns and electrocution.
