How to Keep Your Baby Safe Outdoors
Camping or caravanning with your baby can be a wonderful experience—as long as you follow safe sleep guidelines. Whether you’re staying in a tent or a caravan, it’s important to create a secure sleep environment for your little one to reduce risks like suffocation, overheating, or sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI).
Where Should My Baby Sleep While Camping?
The safest sleep space for your baby while camping is a portable cot (portacot) that complies with the Australian Standard AS/NZS 2195.
Key Tips for Safe Baby Sleep Outdoors:
- Use only the mattress provided with the portacot—do not add padding or extra mattresses
- Keep the cot clear of soft toys, bumpers, and loose items that could pose a choking or suffocation risk
- Ensure firm, flat, and well-ventilated sleep spaces
- Never use a pram for sleep, as it increases the risk of overheating and suffocation
If a Portacot Doesn’t Fit…
In a small caravan where a portacot isn’t practical, place a firm, flat mattress directly on the floor. This can be a safe alternative—just ensure the area is free from hazards and well-ventilated.
Create Good Airflow
Babies are more sensitive to heat than adults. Proper ventilation in your tent or caravan helps prevent overheating, a known SIDS risk. Avoid enclosed spaces that trap heat, and check your baby often for signs of heat stress.
What to Avoid When Camping with a Baby
- No extra mattresses or pillows in the cot
- No soft toys, bumpers, or heavy blankets
- Never leave baby sleeping in a pram
- Avoid hot, stuffy, or poorly ventilated environments
