Can Baby Be Slept on their Side?

No, only if a doctor or medical professional has told you to do so.

Babies are safest when placed on their back to sleep. Babies who are placed on their side have twice the risk of SUDI (SIDS and fatal sleeping accidents).

It is not a safe alternative to sleeping a baby on their back. The side position is unstable, and a baby is more likely to roll onto their front, making them at 9 times the risk of SUDI.

When a child can roll independently, they will often reposition themselves onto their side or front. This is considered safe in these children; however it is always best to roll them gently onto their back if you find them sleeping this way.

The safest place for a baby to sleep is on their back.

“I found meeting people in real life who were going through a similar journey helped me greatly. It was so healing to be able to support one another, listen to and share our experiences without judgement or anyone feeling uncomfortable. Without a doubt the peer support I received through Red Nose immensely helped me mentally and emotionally during the times that I needed it the most”
