Pillows are not safe for baby for any reason as they increase baby’s risk of sudden unexpected death in infancy.
Red Nose does not recommend placing a pillow or any other positioning device in a baby’s sleep environment.
Any item placed in a cot may cover the baby’s face and block breathing or cause overheating.
When a baby falls asleep on a pillow, their head can fall forwards, pushing their chin down towards their chest. This can lead to their airway becoming blocked and reduce or stop airflow.
Older babies in a cot are at an increased risk of a sleeping accident by using pillows as a step to climb up and fall out of the cot.
Do not give your baby a pillow until they are over two years of age and no longer sleeping in a cot or portable cot.
