Choosing the right childcare centre for your little one can be difficult.
Questions to help you chose a childcare centre:
- How qualified and experienced are the staff? At least half of the staff must have or be working towards a diploma. All others must have or be working towards a Certificate III.
- What is the ratio of educators to children? Having enough staff means each child is safe and has the attention they need.
- What is the centre’s policy on safe sleep? How often is it reviewed? All childcare centre’s must have a sleep and rest policy that aligns with Red Nose’s six safe sleep recommendations.
- How often will children be checked while asleep? Red Nose recommends that sleeping children are checked at the bedside, rather than through a monitor or window.
- Are short-term sleeping devices used during sleep periods? It is dangerous for infants or children to sleep in devices like bouncers, rockers and prams.
- Have the staff done training with Red Nose? We are the National Authority in safe sleeping practices for infants and children.
- Are sleep routines based around individual children’s needs? Sleep and rest practices should consider each child’s needs and risks.
Make sure your centre meets the Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority national guidelines.
