Where Should Baby Sleep?
Room sharing reduces the risk of sudden infant death and sleeping accidents during day-time and night-time sleeps.
Sleep baby in their own safe sleep space in the same room as their parent or caregiver for at least the first six months.
Sharing a bedroom reduces the risk to baby of sudden and unexpected death in infancy. However, sleeping baby in a safe sleep environment is more important than sharing a room. The room where baby sleeps should be kept free of smoke.
Parents are not expected to watch their baby constantly. They should check on baby regularly to make sure that baby stays on their back and their head and face are not covered. If it is known that baby can roll themselves onto their side or front, they should be settled on their back to sleep but let them find the sleep position they feel most comfortable.
A bassinet takes up less room than a cot in the parent bedroom. However, a baby will grow out of a bassinet as early as a couple of months old. Bassinets should not be used once baby can roll over or pull themselves up the side of the bassinet or is over three months of age.
If using a bassinet, ensure that it has a firm flat mattress, sides that permit airflow, and a stable base that is not tilted.
