Soft bedding is dangerous in a cot and should not be used. Red Nose strongly advises against using pillows for infants and toddlers under the age of two
- Using pillows increases the risk of death of infants.
- If your baby’s face is in contact with a pillow or soft surface they risk suffocating. Some babies may not be able to turn their heads while laying on their tummy, making it difficult for them to breathe.
- Even if your baby is laying on their back but propped up on a pillow, they can be at risk of rolling or slipping down and suffocating.
- Older babies may fall if they try to climb out of the cot by standing on the pillow.
- Avoid using pillows in the sleep environment of infants under two years of age. Pillows are not necessary and can increase the risk to babies.
Wait until the child is older than two years old and no longer sleeping in a cot or port-a-cot before introducing pillows into their sleep space.
