Good planning will help take some pressure off
10 things you can do now to prepare for baby’s arrival
- Attend antenatal classes with your partner. Learn what to expect and how you can support your partner.
- Sign up for SMS4dads. Get free information to help you understand and connect with your baby and partner.
- Pack your hospital bag. Be ready to go from around 35 weeks of pregnancy.
- Build baby’s furniture. Set up baby’s cot so they can sleep safe and sound right from day one.
- Have your infant car restraint fitted. Professional installers can fit a baby car restraint that meets the Australian safety standard and is the correct size for your baby’s age and developmental stage.
- Buy seasonally appropriate clothes. Babies should be dressed so they are comfortably warm, not too hot or too cold.
- Buy four weeks’ worth of nappies and other hygiene essentials. A good rule is 8 to 10 disposable and up to 15 cloth nappies a day for a newborn.
- Prepare and freeze two weeks’ worth of meals. Nobody in the house is going to want to cook when baby arrives, especially if you’re tired.
- Create a list of important phone numbers. Add them as contacts to your phones and make two paper copies – one for the nappy bag, and one for the fridge for you or for visitors to access should they need it.
- Learn how to practice safe sleeping. Follow the Red Nose Safe Sleep Recommendations for all sleeps, both night and day.
Follow this checklist to make things easier when your baby finally arrives!
