Is it Safe to Use a Second-Hand Mattress?
What about a second-hand mattress?
Babies should sleep on a firm, clean, well-fitting mattress that is in good condition.
There is no evidence to show that there is an increased risk of SIDS for babies who sleep on a second-hand mattress providing that:
- Baby is placed on their back to sleep.
- Baby sleeps on a firm mattress that is flat, not tilted or elevated in any way.
- The mattress is clean and in good condition.
- The mattress fits snugly, within 20 mm of sides and ends of the cot
- Tip – check that you can’t fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the cot sides
- Baby sleeps with no bedding covering their face or head.
- There are no loose items such as pillows, blankets, toys, bumpers etc in the cot.
Use second-hand mattresses correctly to ensure they are safe. Baby is placed on their back to sleep.
