Red Nose recognises that not all pregnancies end with a healthy baby. We support families who have experienced the loss of a child and work with researchers to help prevent stillbirth.
Can stillbirth be prevented, or the risks reduced?
More than half of stillbirths that happen each year in Australia have no known cause.
While not all stillbirths can be prevented, the following will reduce the risk and help the mother stay healthy during pregnancy.
- Don’t smoke or be around people who are smoking.
- Go to sleep on your side from 28 weeks.
- Get to know your baby’s normal movements.
- Call your hospital if you are worried.
- Stay healthy.
The doctor or midwife will also be able to suggest many ways to stay healthy during pregnancy and reduce the risk of stillbirth.
If you or someone you know has been impacted by the death of a child, our 24/7 Support Line is available on 1300 308 307.
