There are currently no Australian safety standards for bassinets, so it’s important to know what to look out for when choosing a bassinet.
What to look for in a bassinet:
- A sturdy bottom and wide stable base so it can’t tip over.
- Check all four sides of the bassinet are at least 300mm (about 11.81 in) higher than the top of the mattress base to stop baby falling out.
- A firm, flat mattress, no thicker than 75mm, that’s the correct size for your chosen bassinet.
- Open weave material on all four sides to reduce the risk of suffocation and to provide good air flow for baby.
What to avoid:
- Trims, ribbons, or thick padded sides. These may increase the risk of baby overheating or suffocating.
- Bassinets made of cardboard, these are not suitable for the Australian climate.
Once baby is showing signs of being able to roll, it’s time to move them to a safe cot – this is usually around four months, but it will depend on your child.
