Research shows that going to sleep on your side from 28 weeks of pregnancy can halve the risk of stillbirth compared to sleeping on your back.
Lying on your back in the later stages of pregnancy puts pressure on major blood vessels, which can reduce blood flow to you and your baby.
Stillbirth after 28 weeks of pregnancy happens about once in every 500 babies. It is more likely to happen unexpectedly in normally developed babies whose mothers have uncomplicated pregnancies.
Red Nose recommends women sleep on their side for all sleeps. This includes naps and going back to sleep after waking. Your first sleep position is held for longest time and has deep sleep periods, so it’s very important rest on your side.
Don’t worry if you wake up on your back; moving during sleep is normal. Just roll on your side if this happens.
The important thing is to start every sleep in a side lying position, even if you prefer to sleep on your back.
