A safe mattress is one that is the right size for the cot, is firm, clean and in good condition.
Some important points to remember when using a mattress:
- Make sure the mattress is the size and depth recommended by the manufacturer of the cot.
- There should be no more than a 20mm gap between the mattress and the cot sides.
- Tip – no more than 2 finger width between the edge of the mattress and the sides of the cot.
- Use a firm mattress. A soft mattress can increase the risk of a fatal sleeping accident if the baby sleeps on their tummy.
- Remove all packaging from the mattress.
- If using a detachable waterproof protector, make sure it is strong and has a tight fit.
- With portable cots, use the firm, clean and well-fitting mattress that is supplied with the cot
- Do not add another mattress or any padding in the cot.
- The mattress must be flat, not tilted or elevated in any way.
- A pillow, cushion or sofa is not a safe mattress as they are too soft.
Use a mattress that meets the voluntary standard for testing firmness (AS/NZS 8811.1:2013)
